EJA students participated in a community service project collecting food items for the Athens Food Pantry. Each week students collected various items. Grade levels competed in a friendly competition to see which grade could collect the most food (based on weight). Overall students collected a total of 648 pounds of food items with first grade coming in first place, grade 3 in 2nd place and 2nd grade coming in 3rd place! Members of the Athens Food Pantry came up and spoke to students about their community service at our December assembly.

Coxsackie-Athens School District administrators recently engaged in a collaborative meeting with Rabbi Zoe B. Zak of Temple Israel of Catskill to explore innovative ways to enrich students' educational experiences. The focus of the meeting was to discuss the implementation of presentations and simulations as a valuable learning tool and to establish a meaningful partnership that would benefit the students of Coxsackie-Athens Schools. Recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives and experiential learning, the administrators and Rabbi Zak explored ways to integrate first-hand interviews, simulations and experiential learning into the curriculum. These presentations combined with interviews will provide students with the unique opportunity to gain insights and knowledge directly from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences, contributing to a more comprehensive and well-rounded education. Rabbi Zak will assist in identifying potential interviewees from the local Jewish community, thereby broadening the scope of cultural and historical perspectives available to Coxsackie-Athens students. Superintendent Squier expressed gratitude about the collaborative initiative, stating, "We believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom, and by partnering with Rabbi Zak and our local synagogue, we can offer our students the chance to engage with real-world experiences and diverse viewpoints. This partnership aligns with our commitment to ensuring all students feel they belong, by providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for success in an increasingly interconnected global society. We appreciate Rabbi Zak for her willingness to work with us on such an important topic" The collaboration between Coxsackie-Athens Schools and Rabbi Zak exemplifies an approach to education that goes beyond traditional methods, providing students with valuable opportunities to learn from real-world experiences.

The 7th grade team is honored to nominate Sophia Bink as Rotary Student of the Month. Sophia is a wonderful student to have class. She participates and enriches classroom discussions and activities. Her dependability and work ethic make her a true asset to the classroom. One of Sophia's most commendable qualities is her kindness and empathy. She consistently goes above and beyond to support her classmates, offering a helping hand to those in need. Their ability to connect with others on a personal level has contributed significantly to the sense of community within our school. Sophia has even tried to learn a new language to make new students feel comfortable and part of the school community. We are proud to have Sophia as a member of our school community, and we believe this recognition is well-deserved. Her dedication to her academics and compassion for others sets a high standard for her peers. Congratulations Sophia, this award is well deserved.
