Coxsackie-Athens Central School District applauds the recent advocacy by Senator Michelle Hinchey and Governor Kathy Hochul for universal school meals, an initiative that has profoundly benefited our students and families. Since becoming a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school district in 2023, Coxsackie-Athens has witnessed a transformative increase in meal participation, ensuring that no child goes hungry while at school.
Superintendent Randall Squier highlighted the program’s success, stating, “The introduction of universal free meals has been a game-changer for our district. Not only are we addressing hunger, but we’re also eliminating the stigma associated with meal programs and creating a more equitable learning environment. This initiative has eased financial pressures on families, enabling students to focus on their education.
“I want to thank our food service team led by Mary DiStefano for providing a hospitable atmosphere in our cafeterias,” he added.
Providing free meals has also resulted in significant savings for families. The cost of breakfast was $2.10, and lunch was $3.15 per student. For a family with two children eating both meals at school daily, this change equates to saving over $220 per month.
A comparison of meal participation before and after implementing universal free meals illustrates its remarkable impact:
The program’s success is clear: breakfast participation has more than doubled, and lunch counts have increased by over 50%. These numbers demonstrate the critical role of universal free meals in supporting students’ well-being and academic performance.
The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District extends its gratitude to state leaders, including Senator Hinchey, for championing this initiative and recognizing the value of investments in student health and success. The District encourages ongoing support for universal school meal programs, ensuring that all children in New York State have access to nutritious meals every day.
